Avoiding Bitter/ Smelly Celery

At the store:  A little “Scratch 'N Sniff” does wonders here.

The whiter, the sweeter

Wrap celery stalk in paper towel and plastic wrap.

If growing it:

The bitter taste in celery is due to the buildup of chlorophyll in the stalks. To get rid of the bitter taste, you must blanch the celery by protecting the stalks from sunlight during their last 10 to 14 days of growth.

Thrifty tips: Beating the Heat

AC costs money!!  :

Close all blinds.
Not using the oven... except once in a while, making multiple favorites: crackers, cakes, cookies
Use range while using the oven.
Make on the range instead of baking: Boil squash, "baked" fruit,  Pancakes (this one I might still use oven for timesaving)
Portable fan. 'Nuf said.
Showers in the afternoon.
Thaw frozen meat and veggies- don't just throw it on the burner! Partially thaw veggies in fridge.
Play in the rain.
Hang clothes - ironing is 1/4 cost of using the dryer.
